Vertical ridges on nails

Vertical ridges on nails are common and often harmless, but they can indicate health issues or deficiencies. As you age, these ridges may become more pronounced, extending from the cuticle to the nail tip. Nutritional deficiencies, like insufficient protein, Vitamin B12, or iron, can also cause nail changes. For instance, a lack of protein can weaken nails, while deficiencies in B12 or iron may alter their texture or shape.

Dehydration is another culprit: inadequate water intake affects nails, making them brittle and ridged. “Inadequate hydration affects all parts of the body, including nails.” Therefore, maintaining proper hydration is crucial for healthy nails and skin.

Although vertical ridges are usually benign, persistent changes in nail appearance should prompt a consultation with a healthcare professional to rule out underlying conditions.
