Celebrating her 74th birthday on September 19, Twiggy, born Lesley Hornby, reflects on her groundbreaking 1960s career. At just 5-foot-6, she defied fashion norms and became a symbol of the Swinging Sixties with her signature pixie cut and doll-like eyes.
In a recent podcast, Twiggy shared her reluctance about her famous haircut. “I went in to have it shampooed and set and Leonard saw me… I kind of nodded,” she recalled. Twiggy was too shy to refuse stylist Leonard Lewis’s new haircut, which he meticulously crafted over seven hours.
Twiggy’s pixie cut, highlighted by her large blue eyes, caught the attention of Daily Express editor Deirdre McSharry, leading to her first major photoshoot. She explained, “Leonard put it up in the salon and a journalist saw it. That’s how it all happened.”
Despite her iconic status, Twiggy cherishes her family, emphasizing, “My number one is family. It always has been.” Today, she remains active with her podcast, Tea with Twiggy, and continues to inspire with her timeless style.
