We share the heartbreaking news of Ryleigh Hillcoat-Bee, a three-year-old girl who passed away after being discharged from A&E just three months prior. Her case reveals “missed opportunities” by medical staff, as described by the coroner.
Illness and Discharge
While on holiday in North Wales, Ryleigh became seriously ill. Hospital tests revealed “extraordinarily high” potassium and creatine kinase levels, indicating a severe muscle issue. Despite these alarming results, she was discharged without further investigation.
Worsening Condition
In November 2021, Ryleigh’s condition deteriorated, leading to a heart attack at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where she tragically died.
Coroner’s Findings
During the inquest, Blackpool’s district coroner, Alan Wilson, pointed out missed opportunities to assess Ryleigh’s limited mobility before her discharge. Attorney Diane Rostron remarked, “The hospital was given clear advice… to get specialist advice.” She noted that proper consultation could have led to a diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis and informed treatment options for the family.
