The Mouli grater, a classic French kitchen tool, remains a cherished item despite newer inventions like food processors and microplanes. Originally introduced by Moulinex in the 1940s, it features a rotary design operated with one hand while the other presses food, typically cheese, against it. Although no longer produced by Moulinex, various replicas can be found in cookware stores or vintage markets.
Fans of the Mouli emphasize its durability, with some still using models from the 1940s. Despite its decline in popularity due to modern alternatives, many believe it still holds value in a well-equipped kitchen.
“My first was an orange plastic model,” recalls one enthusiast. “Currently, I have a white plastic version I found in my apartment building’s free box.” While great for grating cheese, it’s also recommended for nuts, fruits, and even making baby food purees. Seeing vintage models has sparked interest in upgrading from plastic to the original metal version.
