I’m Christina, and my 29th birthday was unforgettable, but not for the right reasons. On my birthday, my sister Lori threw me a surprise party, which was both touching and troubling.
Two days before, I mentioned to Lori that I likely wouldn’t celebrate due to medical bills. On my birthday, Lori invited me over, where I was surprised with a party. “This is amazing! Thank you, thank you so much!” I exclaimed.
However, Lori soon handed me an envelope with a $2,145 bill for the party. “It’s, uh, the bill for the party!” she said, leaving me in shock. Not only did she throw a party I couldn’t afford, but she expected me to pay.
Later, I found a bill with a note: “For Christina’s b-day bash! Love, Sarah,” revealing that others had also contributed. When I confronted Lori, she stammered that she was holding the money for safekeeping. I demanded the money be returned and stated, “I’m not paying a cent for this party. Lori, you can return the money to everyone who chipped in.”
