School Warns Students About Chanting “USA”

Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom, California, sparked controversy by advising students not to chant “USA” during sports events, citing concerns it might be perceived as intolerant. The chant, traditionally a sign of patriotism, had been used negatively at other schools, leading to the warning.

Senior Ryan Bernal disagreed with the restriction, stating, “Why can’t we chant USA? We’re all American. It doesn’t matter what your skin tone is or where you’re from.”

In an email, the school’s principal explained that the chant could unintentionally send the wrong message. However, the principal clarified that the chant is still allowed during appropriate moments, such as after the national anthem or Pledge of Allegiance.

District officials reassured students that there’s no outright ban but encouraged “empathy and kindness alongside patriotism.”

The decision sparked debate online, with some commenters criticizing the school, with one saying, “Shame on the leadership… be thankful the students voiced their love for our country.”
