Richard Simmons, the vibrant fitness guru known for his infectious energy, has died at 76. According to his representative, Simmons passed away from natural causes, and no foul play is suspected. The Los Angeles Police Department found him dead after a 911 call from his housekeeper.
Simmons had recently posted on Facebook, stating he was “dying,” but later clarified that his intention was to inspire people to “embrace every day that we have.” Despite his absence from the public eye, there were reports of a biopic about him, which Simmons dismissed, saying, “I just try to live a quiet life and be peaceful.”
Active on social media, Simmons thanked fans for birthday wishes just a day before his death, saying, “Thank you…I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday.”
Born Milton Teagle Simmons on July 12, 1948, in New Orleans, he became Richard Simmons and made a name for himself with his Slimmons gym and the “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” fitness videos.
