An 18-year-old poised to make history as Tonga’s first Caucasian Olympian, tragically passed away just weeks before the Paris Games

Jackson James Rice, an 18-year-old poised to make history as Tonga’s first Caucasian Olympian, tragically passed away just weeks before the Paris Games. Jackson, who hailed from a family managing a hotel in Tonga, died on June 15 while free diving. His sister confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media.

Jackson’s Olympic journey was in kite foil racing, a competitive sport under kite surfing. He qualified as a representative of Tonga, a country he deeply embraced despite being born in the United States.

His death was attributed to a shallow water blackout, a phenomenon where oxygen levels drop dangerously after prolonged breath-holding in shallow water. Jackson’s body was discovered beneath the boat, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The young athlete’s promising future and his unique Olympic debut for Tonga have left a community in mourning. May he rest in peace.
