In a touching tale, a teacher from Illinois, nicknamed “Ms. Helma,” showed remarkable dedication to ensure 10-year-old Maggie Vazquez, who has cerebral palsy, could join a two-day hiking trip. Ms. Helma went the extra mile by physically carrying Maggie, making the trip inclusive and memorable.
Ms. Helma faced the challenge of including Maggie in the trip to Camp Sullivan, 40 miles from their Chicago charter school, Academy of Global Citizenship. Despite logistical hurdles, Ms. Helma persisted. She found a carrier suitable for taller children like Maggie after exploring various options and seeking help on social media.
By purchasing a $300 carrier called the Freeloader, Ms. Helma made it possible for around 50 fourth-grade students and 10 school staff to enjoy the camping trip from May 30 to June 1. Though carrying Maggie through rough terrain was tough, Ms. Helma found inspiration in Maggie’s resilience and joy.
Maggie’s mother, Michelle Vazquez, commended Ms. Helma for her extraordinary efforts, stating that she went “way above and beyond.” The school’s executive director, Sarah Elizabeth Ippel, hailed Ms. Helma as the “epitome of relentless determination.”
