Certain parking spots outside Pembroke’s OPP station now feature a handshake symbol, marking them as safe zones for in-person transactions resulting from online purchases. According to the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP, these spots aim to enhance community safety during exchanges that would otherwise occur in private or less secure locations.

“The idea behind establishing a ‘community safety zone’ is to shift online transactions from private parking lots, homes, and other locations to public spaces,” explained an OPP news release. These designated areas operate 24/7 without requiring appointments, providing a secure environment for face-to-face transactions.

Steph Neufeld, commander of the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detachment, emphasized the initiative’s role in reducing online marketplace-related offenses, especially with the holiday season approaching. Constable Mike Mahon advised caution, noting that if a meeting location raises doubts or the other party seems hesitant, it’s prudent to reconsider.

To stay safe when meeting strangers for transactions:

• Bring a trusted companion.
• Conduct transactions during daylight.
• Keep records of communications.

Technology analyst Carmi Levy stressed the importance of research and verification before finalizing any transaction.
