Derek was frantic after his daughter Amber disappeared a week ago. Despite police assurances, there were no new leads. “As soon as we know something, we will inform you immediately,” an officer had said.
While heading home, Derek spotted a homeless woman with Amber’s backpack. He asked, “Where did you get this?” The woman replied, “Found it at the bus station; some teenage girl left it behind.” Inside, Derek discovered a note with an address labeled “Hostess Family.”
Derek drove to the address, but a woman there said Amber never arrived. Feeling hopeless, Derek returned home and saw his ex-wife, Miranda, in a café. Derek suspected Amber might be with her. Initially, Miranda denied knowing anything, but when Derek found Amber’s inhaler, Miranda admitted Amber had been there.
Amber, overhearing their conversation, fled but Derek caught up with her crying on a bench. “I’m so sorry, Dad. I didn’t mean to worry you,” Amber said. Derek hugged her and replied, “It’s okay. You just wanted to meet your mom. But you’re grounded for two weeks.” Amber smiled, feeling safe again.
