An Arizona man, Matt Shaha, grew his hair for nearly three years to create a special gift for his mother, Melanie, who lost her hair due to radiation treatment for a recurrent brain tumor. “It’s a no-brainer,” Matt said about his decision to help his mother, who had undergone surgeries in 2003 and 2006 but needed radiation in 2017 when the tumor returned.
Melanie had been devastated by hair loss, feeling it made her stand out in public. “Not having hair, you stick out like a sore thumb… I’d rather blend in and not stand out at the store,” she shared.
After joking about making a wig for her, Matt took the offer seriously, spending two and a half years growing his hair. He eventually cut it off and paid $2,000 to have a custom wig made. “Seeing her in it… it’s the first time I had seen my mom look like that since she lost it,” Matt said.
Melanie was thrilled with the wig, stating it “fills your emotional cup.”
