A tragic car crash in Dothan, Alabama, claimed the life of 19-year-old McKenzie Amanda Grace Catron. The crash spooked her dog, Kai, causing it to flee.
“We felt we needed to find the dog,” said Sgt. Jonathan Whaley. “We were going to do whatever we needed to do to reunite this dog with this family.”
Sgt. Whaley and his team launched an extensive search, supported by the community. They distributed fliers, offered a reward, and combed the crash area. Lawyer Benjamin Irwin, who contributed to the reward, ultimately spotted Kai two days later.
“My wife and I, with this wonderful couple Allen and Brittany pursued Kai for over a mile,” Irwin posted on Facebook. They eventually caught Kai after several attempts and provided her with water and food.
Kai was found in good health but tired and dehydrated. Irwin donated the reward money to the animal shelter where Kai was originally from.
“If everybody would react this way, our world would be such a better place,” said Sgt. Whaley.
