Recently, a delightful trend of “free libraries” has been popping up in my neighborhood. These are small, street-side boxes where people can freely borrow and exchange books. You can take a book, read it, and then return it, or contribute some of your own.
One extraordinary example is Sharalee Armitage Howard’s creation in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Instead of removing a 110-year-old dead cottonwood tree stump, Sharalee transformed it into a magical free library. She carved out the inside, added a roof, and beautifully lit the interior. “This is the most charming free library I’ve ever seen!” I can attest to its enchantment, especially at night when the warm glow from inside creates a cozy atmosphere.
Sharalee’s tree library is not just a unique space for book lovers but also a whimsical addition to her front lawn. It’s a testament to creativity and community spirit, making a positive impact and fostering shared knowledge.
