Imagine the thrill of graduating from college with Jerry Seinfeld as your commencement speaker. For most Duke graduates, it was a momentous occasion. However, some students left during his speech because he’s a Jewish comedian. Ironically, they missed out on hearing from a celebrity critical of left-wing political correctness.
While most students cheered for Seinfeld, walking out was seen as disrespectful. Graduation should be a celebration for everyone, not just a select few protesters. Disrupting the ceremony by leaving not only spoiled their own experience but also affected others.
After years of hard work, it’s important to show respect for your college and fellow graduates. As one observer noted, “Even if you don’t find him funny, it’s important to respect your college and fellow graduates.” Graduation is a milestone for everyone, and everyone should contribute to making it special for all.
