On the first day of Liberty Lake Day Camp in Burlington County, New Jersey, six-year-old Michael Jeffrey Stewart tragically drowned. Michael’s mother, Enjoli Stewart, expressed profound grief and frustration, stating, “Liberty Lakes messed up. Big time. And now I don’t have a son anymore. That’s heartbreaking,” according to FOX 29.
Michael had been excited about starting camp, which his mother had invested thousands in. The tragedy occurred during an afternoon swim period for young campers. A lifeguard found Michael unresponsive in a shallow pool, performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at a local hospital later that day.
Michael was born prematurely at just 23 weeks, weighing only one pound, defying the odds to become a loving and intelligent child. “Michael taught me how to fight and he taught me to fight without using my hands,” Enjoli said, reflecting on his inspiring resilience and strength.
